Prairie View Lodge

A renovated farmhouse in the middle of the pothole country, five minutes from the fields — built around early mornings, big breakfasts and a bird-cleaning shed that gets used hard.

Prairie View is the waterfowl base. It is a farmhouse that has been added to twice, with eight beds, a mud room big enough for everybody's waders, and a kitchen that turns out breakfast at half past four without complaint.

Waterfowl hunting is a morning sport, so the lodge is organised around getting hunters out fast and looking after them properly when they come back. Decoys and blinds are trailered and ready the night before; the birds are hung, plucked or breasted in the cleaning shed by early afternoon, and vacuum-sealed and frozen for the trip home.

Afternoons are quiet. Some hunters nap, some come along scouting, and some walk the bluffs behind the yard for sharptails. Dinner is at seven and the scouting report is given over it.
